June 2: Descending Connors Pass brings Wheeler Peak and Great Basin National Park into view. The heat was bearing down, but a thin cloud cover was moving in providing some much needed relief from the ever increasing intensity of the now afternoon sun. What a blessing! It was going to be difficult enough rationing water with the 90+ degree temps. Yes, the clouds were welcomed. But as the clouds followed me along, the increasing southerly wind did as well, attempting to push me back down the pass as I inched forward. As I crested the summit the long downhill reward lured me on. But the gusty winds necessitated that I work on the way down as well. At the bottom it was time to turn onto Hiway 93 which would lead me down the Long Valley eventually to Cathedral Gorge. Wheeler Peak at 13,000+ feet is an awesome sight protecting the eastern side of the valley.
