May 29: Before the turn-off to Carroll Summit, on the north side of US 50, stands the infamous Shoe Tree. The legend of the tree involves a newly married couple already in disagreement over something trivial, and the young wife tossing her man's shoes up in the tree. People have been hurling shoes over its limbs ever since. A very strange site indeed, especially since this is the only tree for many miles.
