August 18: There is some beautiful riding between Lexington and the Blue Ridge Parkway. And a great stopping off point before heading up the mountain is at the Mallard Campground and Hostel. This morning I enjoyed the up and down coaster ride to Vesuvius, where I would recommend riding a mile off route to the west to Gerties Country Store and Deli. Don't forget to write your name on the ceiling. The 5-mile climb from Vesuvius to the Blue Ridge Parkway is one to remember, but one is rewarded by a 35-mile roller coaster ride above the Shenandoah Valley to the west.
