May 30: Looking back toward Carroll Summit to the west. There are no flat streets in Austin. Hiway 50 forms the main street. We got a chilly, but early start up the cork-screw climb to the top of 7400' Austin Summit. Gliding down the other side the road was suddenly covered with jumping and screeching Mormon crickets. Worried that the hiway might be slippery, I brought the speed down a bit. The views coming down were tremendous.
