29 March: Ascending Pacheco Pass, the hillsides were lush with Springtime color, providing the cattle with choice grazing. Pacheco Pass was on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route which connected the American midwest with San Francisco from 1858 until completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.
