August 1: The heat and humidity through central Kentucky were telling so I took refuge in the Sonora, Kentucky General Store. The old store was from another lifetime, featuring rough wooden floors, ceiling fans, and a lunch counter. Feeling a bit out of gas, I ordered a green salad and a slice of homemade apple pie. John Veague was sitting at the table across the way discussing local affairs with a weathered older gentleman. About that time the waitress inquired about my travels, so I shared with her the answers to the questions I've received a hundred times before. It so happened that John was listening in and got noticeably excited. He came over to my table sporting a big friendly smile, saying "that's the kinda thing I'd like to do." I invited him to have a seat and he began sharing the best local roads to take.
